Postgame Review: #1 Boston College

Northeastern beat 3-1 in a thrilling game in front of a sellout crowd at Matthews Arena. It was the best game I’ve seen in a very long time, probably years, and beating the National Champions in their first regular season game is pretty great.

What to Like:

It was great to see a full game effort out of the Huskies. Last year in the opening game against BC the Huskies stormed out of the gate and took a lead, but then sat back in the 2nd and 3rd period, ran out of energy, and let BC win it in overtime. That was absolutely not the case this time. Northeastern kept an even tempo throughout he game, didn’t let themselves get tired out, and kept up with BC. Northeastern didn’t try to go all out, and instead slowed BC down to the Huskies’ advantage.

It was also great to see 3 freshmen net the goals. Kevin Roy is something special, we all know that. But Ryan Belonger had a phenomenal game. He works hard in the corners, and fought hard to create that scoring chance. Cam Darcy has some great moves and wins faceoffs, and both Lauwers and Saucerman were very good defensemen. The defense in general was solid, they kept BC to the outside and did a nice job of getting sticks and bodies in front of BC.

What to Improve:

Honestly I didn’t see a lot I didn’t like here, it was one of NU’s best games in quite some time. NU needs to cut down on penalties still, however. Also, it would be nice to see a power play goal at some point.

Other than that, excellent game all around. Northeastern showed that it can handle one of the best teams in the league, and it’ll be great to see it putting up a similar show down the line.

You think that 3 penalties for NU during this game warrants an argument to cut down on penalties? Yes, BC scored on one of them by showing us their 2011-2012 championship skill level, however I hardly think that your comment is justified…especially after the second game in the season.
