The last couple of days have been pretty busy with news. Here’s a brief recap:
-Obviously the big news is Max Nicastro’s arrest. Nicrastro, a BU defenseman, was charged with 2 counts of rape. This is obviously an incredibly terrible situation for the girl involved. It also says something about what’s going on over at BU. That’s now 6 cases of players suspended or kicked off the team in 3 years. And among all of BU’s students, on,y 5 sexual assaults were reported (out of 33,000 students). Now with 2 in BU’s 20 or so players in the course of 3 months, there needs to be a serious investigation. That this happened again after the Trivino debacle (especially since Parker “knew” Trivino would do something) speaks to a problem in the team that needs to be immediately addressed before it happens again
-On much lighter news, the Northeastern women’s hockey team beat Providence on Sunday, edging BC by a point to take the Regular Season title for the first time in their history. This is terrific news, and followed up by Kendall Coyne and Florence Schelling’s nominations for the Patty Kazimer award (equivalent to the men’s Hobey Baker) marks a great regular season. I am very much looking forward to seeing them in action in the playoffs, and hopefully the NCAA tournament too
-Finally, Brad Thiessen was recalled to Pittsburgh from Wilkes-Barre. Terrific news for him, even if it’s just a short-term thing. I’ve looked around at various news sites, but there’s no clear consensus as to why he’s there. Brent Johnson was reported sick, but some people think it might also be because Johnson has been quite terrible in his last few games, or that Thiessen might be a trade possibility. Either way, congratulations to Brad, and hopefully he gets into his first NHL game soon.
