Saturday Preview: #2 Minnesota

Despite the ugly game, we got where wanted to be, and face off against Minnesota tonight. Northeastern has a little bit of fortune, as the Gopher’s #1 and #3 lead scorers (also their 2 top goal scorers), Nick Bjugstad and Kyle Rau are at the World Junior Championships in Canada. Despite these big players being gone from their lineup, Minnesota is one of the best teams in the nation. Their goalie, Kent Patterson, leads the nation with 6 shutouts, and has a sub-2 GAA. They have an incredibly deep team, and after beating up on Niagara 5-1 yesterday, they’ll be looking to win their own championship tonight.

Northeastern needs to do what has been working for them, especially against other top teams in the nation. Score first, and keep up offensive pressure on the other team. The Huskies put 41 shots on goal yesterday, and should put up a similar number tonight. Don’t play selfish or look for perfect plays. Keep firing on Patterson, force mistakes and turnover, and pounce upon them. Some incredibly solid team defense needs to be played as well. Force the Gophers to the outside and block every shot you can. Rawlings will need to stand tall tonight, and his defense will need to be there to help him. All in all, Northeastern needs to play a very solid game tonight to win.
