Pre-game Notes: Northeastern at University of Massachusetts

Tonight the Huskies take on UMass Amherst. UMass destroyed Holy Cross last night, 7-2, so it’ll be interesting to see if UMass can score a lot in this game. Northeastern hasn’t been doing terribly, it just needs to really handle that last period a lot better. The Huskies have an unfortunate tendency to shut down in the 3rd.

It’s almost too repetitive to write, but here goes: The Huskies need a complete effort over all 3 periods, and can’t afford to sit back. They have to be aggressive and keep attacking. They need to make something work on the Power Play, and they need to give a complete defensive effort, meaning no stupid turnovers or failures to clear the zone. Also, SHOOT THE DAMN PUCK. That’d be great.

For UMass, we’ll see if they can keep up the offensive tempo. Sometimes, teams will run up a huge score in the first game, and then have problems scoring much the next night (See UVM’s 9-2 win over Northeastern and then their 2-1 loss the next night). One of those weird, unexplained things, and may very well not happen, but we can hope can’t we? Finally, UMass has a bit of a goalie issue. They have 3 goalies, all with sub-.900 save percentages and goals allowed significantly over 3. Mastalerz got the start last night, so I’d bet against him being in. My guess is Boyle gets the start, he’s been relied on most so far and he’s faced Northeastern already.

I predict a 3-1 Northeastern win, if only for my sanity.
