The Huskies future players have seen a bit of shakeup this past weekend. First was the addition of Ryan Belonger, a RC for the Youngstown Phantoms. Belonger committed on Wednesday, after visiting the campus the day before. Belonger also looked at Wisconsin and Providence at least, and probably was recruited by others. Belonger is a nice pickup, and had a 21-14-35 line in 59 games last year. This is especially nice considering Youngstown’s poor performance last year and lack of offensive production. He’s also done well this year already, posting 6 points in 5 games so far. Belonger will likely be a nice replacement for whatever forwards we lose.
On the downside, we lose Mike McKee, a Defenseman from the Lincoln Stars. McKee’s loss marks another departure from people recruited by Cronin and company. McKee is 6’5” and was draft eligible this past year, but was not picked up, because he was considered a raw defenseman (having switched from being a forward 2 years previously). McKee’s departure is not very surprising, and don’t be surprised if Renz doesn’t come either. If so, look for another recruit for next year.
Overall, I think this is a decent trade. We should have a pretty experienced blueline next year, and we can always use more scoring depth. This also frees up some money to bring in a late-bloomer this year.
