Northeastern has picked up 2 new recruits in the past few days, a defenseman and a forward.
First was Michael Gunn, slated for arrival next fall. Gunn committed to play at Michigan State back when he was 15, but suffered injuries, and with MSU being loaded on the blueline decided to look elsewhere. He tried out for the US U-17 team back in 2008, and was rated highly by the Western College Hockey Blog. From everything I’ve read he was a terrific prospect who latched onto an up and coming team in MSU (right after they won their National Championship in 2007). He’s also likely a hedge against an unsure defensive crop next year. Bitetto might sign with Nashville if he has a good year, Mike McKee might end up signing with a Canadian league or going elsewhere, and Ryan Renz may never end up coming. The coaching staff seems convinced something’s going to give, so don’t be surprised to not see one of those names on next year’s roster. He looks like a good two-way defenseman, and someone we could use as a 6th or 7th dman even if we return everyone. Gunn currently plays for the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL (where NU graduate Rob Rassey is assistant coach)
Secondly is Zachary Aston-Reese, who is coming in 2013. Reese was originally committed to Brown University, but with Jerry Keefe leaving the assistant coach position there and coming to Northeastern, it’s likely he was the one who recruited him and Reese felt a connection to him. Reese was rumored to be interested in signing with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL, but sticking with the college route is good. He’s a 1994 birthdate, and he’s playing currently with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL, so he’ll have 2 years of great competition to be prepared for D1 hockey. Reese has gotten good reports, so he seems like a good pickup.
Looking forward to seeing both these guys wear Husky uniforms soon.
As a final note, I’ll be starting a recruit page to keep track of our recruits for the next few years, they’re stats, etc.
